My Flower Story

Princess Victoria Louise oriental poppy

Flowers have always been a huge part of my life.

From growing up gardening with grandparents, to taking Environmental Design in university, to working in retail greenhouses, you might say that gardening and growing flowers is in my blood.

After I graduated from university, I married my husband and moved from Manitoba to Alberta. We bought a house together and worked on beautifying our yard, ripping out all the grass in the front and planting perennial flowers. Fast forward a few years (and a few kids) later, and we found the acreage of our dreams. My parents moved in with us, and we have been ripping out grass, leveling ground, and planting extensive ornamental and vegetable gardens.

I never dreamed that all this would lead to me becoming a flower farmer. I had always believed that it would be impossible to grow quality cut flowers in the Canadian prairies, at least not without the help of a greenhouse or two. I had always enjoyed making small bouquets for myself, and occasionally for others, but I never considered that I could make it a viable business.

When my youngest child started school, I began considering ways I could potentially work from home. I don’t even know where the idea of trying to grow flowers for sale came from, I just know it was inspired by a compliment from a friend. My dear friend was celebrating 5 years of being cancer free, so naturally I picked her a small bouquet of flowers from my garden. She later told me that they were the most beautiful flowers she had ever received, even nicer than her wedding flowers, and they smelled amazing!

Well that did it! Here I had wanted to bless my friend and in turn she blessed me with her kind words, all because of flowers. The sight and smell of flowers does something to people. They bring back nostalgic memories and make people feel happy, loved and appreciated. Flowers are almost always part of important events in people’s lives - births, graduations, weddings, and funerals. The more I thought about becoming a flower farmer, the more excited I became. I began to think about the lives I could touch in such a small but meaningful way.

So here I am - wife to amazing husband, mom to 4 kiddos, living with my parents (again), and a budding flower farmer. I hope you will join me on my flower journey so that you too can bring beauty to the lives of others.
