Fresh Flower Care

Local grown cut flowers are a little different than imported flowers, so here are some flower care tips:

  • When picking up your flowers, do not leave them in a hot car, or in the direct sun. If you are having flowers delivered, we will try our best to leave them in a shady location if you are not at home. Alternatively, do not leave flowers anywhere they might freeze.

  • Local grown flowers have been harvested at their ideal time. This will most likely mean they are not as open as you may think they should be. Harvesting flowers at the ideal time allows you, the customer, to enjoy the longest possible vase life of your flowers.

  • Use the flower food provided, mixed according to directions. Fresh local flowers have been in water since harvest, so their stems have been constantly drinking. Their stems are not sealed over, like what happens with imported flowers. The flower food provided will help your blooms last longest and allow them to open fully over the coming days.

  • To ensure your flowers will continue to drink, cut off 1/2” to 1” of the stem before placing in your vase with water.

  • Check the water level daily! Local grown flowers drink much more water than imported ones. Top up your vase with cool, clean water.

  • Change the water in your vase at least every second day. Be sure to clean out your vase with warm soapy water! The saying goes that your vase should be clean enough to drink from. Re-cut the stems and place into cool water with additional flower food (if available).

  • If possible, place your flowers in a cool area over night.

  • Make every effort to keep flowers away from fruit and vegetables, as some flower varieties are extremely ethylene sensitive. Ethylene is the gas given off by ripening fruit and vegetables (think: bananas turning brown).

  • Most flowers will last a week if well taken care of. There are some varieties that will always have a shorter life span (like dahlias, roses, and sweet peas). Others can last longer than a week (like ranunculus and sunflowers).

  • As with all plants, please be careful with your flowers around children and pets.
